MOTOROLA MOTO EDGE 20 DEPTH UNBOXING REVIEW

 MOTOROLA MOTO EDGE 20

so in moderators freshdo trilogy of flagship smartphones the standard mortal edge 20 is the piggy in the middle sat in between the light and the pro it'll cost you 430 quid here in the uk making it considerably cheaper than that well expensive pro model but it still posts many of the same premium features including a 144hz oled display and a 108 megapixel primary camera sensor and yet despite that it's also the slimmest of the trio as well so it should slip with please and ease into any pants if you're pumped to keep your smartphone in your pants but enough talk of pants it's time to whip the model edge 21 out of the box taking a full on tour of the hardware in the software and for more on the latest and greatest tech please do poke subscribe ending that notifications bell cheers so what do you got in the box besides the moto edge 20. we've also got an adapter 30 watts a usb cable type c readme guide many languages and one condom case pre-installed and it's only upon prize and off the aforementioned prophylactic case you realize just how skinny the mortal edge 20 really is in fact it's just a gnats pube under seven millimeters so definitely one of the skinnier smartphones i've fondled in quite some time although the camera chassis does jut somewhat out of that awesome definitely making up for it you've got a similar design here on the motorola moto edge 20 to the pro model but it's a bit more basic a bit more stripped back here on the edge 20 you've got a plastic back for one although it's still got that lovely matte finish so hopefully it should improve all smudgy it's another 6.7 inch whopper so definitely very hand filling but you've got pleasing curves around those corners so that helps somewhat with the comfort even if the edges are definitely distinctively flat and that is actually an aluminium frame as well the whole thing isn't plastic but overall a nice clean simple aesthetic and i gotta say i rather like it and the model edge 20 is ip52 water repellent as well so not full on water resistant definitely don't go dunking it into water about absolutely fine if you get caught in a drizzle or you know you spill your shandy on it all right moto edge 20 is all set up good to go let's just give it a bit of a poke and see what the sim tray situation's like and similar to the pro model looks like the moto edge 20 can support two sims at the same time but there is no space in there for microsd memory cards to expand the onboard storage you've got 128 gigs of ufs 3.1 storage on here should keep you going for a while even if you're making liberal use of that camera tech downloading lots of netflix all that good stuff but of course it's a shame you don't have that expandability and on here you've got of course a usual you know the deal here guys a nice clean stock version of android 11. uh and motorola is promising two years of os and security updates as well so hopefully should get android 13 without a grumble although it's still not quite as good as what some rivals are offering likes of oneplus and nokia often offer at least three years of os and security updates but it's better than nothing you've got to love that stock android vibe though nice and clean and sleek no heavy launchers sat on top there and it's nice to dive into the apps tree as well and only seeing the google apps and of course the apps that you've downloaded yourself as well mod roller's only addition is the moto experiences app which as usual just adds a bunch of bonus bits including the ability to quickly and easily personalize you mortal edge 20 so you can stick on the wallpaper you've got all kinds of styling options in here too you can mess around with the icons the fonts the colors get it looking exactly how you like it got the usual great gesture support on there as well so you can flip for do not disturb you can lift to unlock and of course as always my personal favorite the fast torch usual display features and a good bit of moto game time as well which is great news if you are a gamer and i'll be demonstrating that later and like uh the edge 20 pro you also can have an edge mounted fingerprint sensor very appropriate but again it is housed quite far up that right edge so it is a little bit of a stretch to get to especially if you have stubby wii digits like myself but so far touchwood seems just as responsive and reliable and there is a face unlock option as well which you can couple with that raise to wake gesture so you don't even have to really bother stretching all the way up to that fingerprint sensor if you can't be bothered this is too blur why is my face always too blurry what is it about my face that mod roller does not like so let's give that a go see if that actually works yep seems to be again fairly fast and responsive and then there's that 6.7 inch oled display which is an absolute stunner at this price point of course you do i get all that displays on the likes the oneplus handsets the pixels as well but this is a 6.7 inches it was absolutely freaking massive great news if you're a media fan full hd plus resolution so reasonably crisp visuals there and the great news is you've got full hdr 10 plus support as well 10 bit color on there for nice natural looking images otherwise you can uh keep the colors on saturated level in the settings for those really nice poppy punchy in your face have a bit of it kind of visuals it's got the usual customization shenanigans you can do here in the display settings including tinkerine with those colors so they do start unsaturated by default but you can have more natural hues if you prefer you can also play around with like the color temperature and it's also great to see as well despite the fact it's an oled screen you once can have that 144 hertz refresh rate here on the standard moto edge 20. and as you can see there you can have this phone on full auto so dynamic refresh it will uh change the refresh rate to match whatever app you're using at the time otherwise you can just bump it up to 144 hertz full time so it on the audio front not quite as impressive sadly the moto edge 20 you do just get a mono speaker output just this bottom speaker here there's no stereo output but let's bump up the volume see if it's any good well i've been using it as my full-time smartphon for over a week now i've actually taken on holiday it with me to give it a thorough testing out so here's my in-depth motorola moto h20 pro review yeah just like the pro model this sounds pretty clear on that top volume uh not too tinny although of course if you're going to be playing music or you know enjoying a movie or something like that you're going to want to get some headphones on the go sadly though there's no headphone jack here on the moto edge 20 again just like that pro model so you're stuck with using type c dongles if you want to get connected otherwise bit bluetooth action as well as for the performance well motorola has stuff qualcomm snapdragon 778g chipset into the edge 20 a very capable 700 series platform you'll also find it in samsung's fresh new galaxy a52 s5g and so far the performance has been very very smooth indeed helped along of course by that 144 hertz display that you've got here on the model edge 20. if you're a bit of a benchmark fan well these are the geekbench 5 scores i just say very respectable indeed actually not too far off what i got on the edge 20 pro with its snapdragon 870. that helps along by the fact you've got generous eight gigs of ram stuffed in here as well so i'm certainly confident that you'll be able to get gaming on any android title out there including the likes of memory hogs like gentian impact uh no worry so i'm gonna have a bit of a gaming session on that right now just to make sure that it does run nice and smooth and before i do that as mentioned before you do have that motorola game time feature that you can call up with a quick swipe from the side otherwise the top of the icon depends on your preference and this offers up a good selection of bonus features to really help you get you into that game get you all immersed so i really like the fact you can just have it blocking calls and notifications automatically when you load up a game it's got a high performance mode which i will be bumping on as well just to uh really make the most of that gentian impact and yeah gotta say definitely impressed by the moto edge20s gaming prowess even a proper half hour session on gentian impact did not struggle at all nice smooth frame rate throughout on the sort of medium averagey detail settings the display is nice and responsive uh as well so every swiping port instantly replicated and speaking of the screen it's a 6.7 inches for a nice clear view of the action uh at any point as well and really likes the nice punchy colors on the gentian impact as well really is very attractive indeed and if like me you get proper excited by some super fast internet connectivity come on who doesn't well you've got a good bit of 5g support and wi-fi 6 as well here on the standard moto edge 20 so nice and nippy when you get yourself online as for the battery tech well the standard moto edge 20 does support the smallest capacity cell of all of the new edge 20 smartphones it's a 4 000 milliamp battery does seem to go down pretty fast when you are really pushing it to its limits doing a bit of gaming so if you're a more demanding user i'd probably say maybe look at the likes of the pro which bumps up that battery capacity to 4500 milliamp instead but touchwood the snapdragon 778 seems to be pretty energy efficient as well so just everyday users should be able to get through a full stretch no worries and when you do run out of juice as well where you've got mud rollers 30 watts turbo power fast charging on here not exactly the fastest round by any means but hopefully you should do the job absolutely fine you'd have the optimized charging feature as well if you're gonna be plugging it in all night long just to help prevent long-term battery damage and so let's finish up with a quick squint at that triple lens rear camera which does jut ever so slightly out of that back end and like the pro model the standard moto edge 20 comes back in a 108 megapixel primary sensor use a nine in one pixel bin just to capture nice bright natural looking snaps and as you can see there you've got the ai smart as usual with motorola blurs as well which can just analyze your subject and suggest maybe switch into a different mode where applicable so for instance i can highlight the lovely veronica here with the portrait mode which just adds a nice bit of bokeh style background effect to help it really stand out just to give you an example of what the model edge 20s mighty 108 megapixel sensor i capable of here's just a few quick test shots that i snapped around the old homestead and as you can see that large sensor seems to mean nice bright picks even in quite ambient light indoor locations things like that you also have a 16 megapixel ultra wide angle lens that you can snap to for a very different view of the action just pulls it right back you can fit lots into frame or alternatively you've also got the telephoto zoom lens if you want to get much much closer this is an 8 megapixel sensor just like the pro model but you've only got a three times optical zoom here rather than the five times optical zoom of the pro but still very very good at this price point it's quite rare to find a teleforce or shooter i thought these aren't just good for your touristy shots and things like that as well it's also really good if you've got kids or pets you want to get a nice unintrusive shot of them just naturally playing or whatever is all about sticking a smartphone right in their face basically and as usua motorola has added plenty of bonus features as well including the dedicated night modes you got spot color modes for just bleeding the background and keeping your subject uh nice and colorful ultra res mod if you do want to shoot a 108 megapixel snap for whatever reason and a good bit of pro mode as well if you want to tinker around with the likes of the white balance the iso levels for your video needs well uh it's a bit more limited compared with the pro model you can't shoot 8k for and you do have full hd at either 30 or 60 frames per second you can bump up to 4k as well but you can't shoot 4k at 60fps as for that selfie camera it's a 32 megapixel effort and i'd imagine like the pro should prove absolutely fine for all of your insta needs certainly seems to capture all of those wrinkles and sags and bags and all of that good stuff so that right there in a nutshell is the fresh new motorola moto edge 20. the piggy in the middle as far as the trio of new flagship smartphones of 2021 goes but certainly very impressively spec'd for that price point if you can't quite stretch up to the pro we still got that 108 megapixel primary sensor you've got a decent telephoto shooter on there which again is quite rare at this price point you've got that same stock android vibe as well with the two years of guaranteed os and security updates so not quite as strong admittedly as the oneplus nords ii or the google pixel phones in that department but certainly on most other fronts it seems to be very strong competition indeed so that's what i think of the standard moto edge 20 stay tuned for my in-depth mode wage 20 light unboxing and hopefully going to get you a full review of that bad boy as well and i've already reviewed the pro so go check that out if you want to know more if more on the list and great site.
