the automotive industry is a fast evolving place in general however certain segments such as the luxury three-row crossover segment are continuously bringing out new rivals that's why brands like audi are also continuously making updates even to very popular products such as the q7 model year 2022 is no different so let's go ahead and jump right into the review and see what's new as well as how this stacks up against the latest competition.

so taking a look here at the exterior this will continue to have that signature q7 design which up in the front means you've got the big octagon shaped grille with the lines that kind of run through it like so of course you'll notice on this particular example all this is fully blacked out that's because we have the black optic package and one of the things i want to point out for 2022.

that's new is the expanded availability of this option so previously you could only get this on the tfsi 55 premium plus and prestige models now you can get that on the tfsi 45 premium plus so you just have a different ability to pair the engines with this more aggressive blacked out look now let's take a look over at the headlights you've still got the same setup of premium full led headlights across the lineup so you have standard full leds these are the upgraded leds on matrix leds on the top end prestige model and then you can further option on laser lights if you want.

let's go ahead and talk about the wheel option so you're going to start out with a very plain looking 19 inch alloy however you can work your way all the way up to 22 inch alloys of various different designs what we have on this specific example is a 21 inch contrast alloy with the really nice looking straight spokes i really have always been a fan of this design and then as we take a look at the mirrors you're going to notice you have pretty much all the features on all the models so you have heating blind spot monitoring as well as power folding and then auto dimming is going to be on the premium plus and above now here at the side you can tell that this q7 is a pretty long vehicle it's 199 inches in length and as far as other things to mention the black optic package is going to black out all of your windows surrounds this piece right here as well as your roof rails and then checking out the rear design of this q7 i'm a huge fan of the color and i'm also a fan of the way the black optic kind of mixes in those black elements as well as some of the silver elements as well so we as you can see we have black audi badging right here down below that though we're going to keep this silver piece that intersects between the tail lights these are going to be a really fancy tail light design as you can tell they are full led they have the really cool dynamic turn signal indicator then if we drop down here this is where your incandescent reverse light will be then further below that the black optic.

is once again going to black out all this area where it would have been silver before and for the v6 model we have a 7 700 pound tow rating now the q7 is a family vehicle and they are recognizing that by giving you more standard safety systems for 2022. so standard on all models are going to be ford emergency braking rear auto braking and auto high beams and new for 2022 the premium plus will also throw in your adaptive cruise control as well as lane keeping assist well as you can tell this q7 is a gorgeous gorgeous suv on the outside. the audi q7 of course you do have a standard smart entry system with the brand's newest key fob nice metal trim and piano black accents and then to get inside the vehicle itself just grab behind the handle there is a sensor.

all right and looking inside this 2022 q7 you're going to notice not really any significant design changes because this interior was completely redesigned just a couple years ago now being a luxury crossover means you've got a lot of different choices for interior color and material options every single q7 is going to come standard with real leather however this particular model is equipped with the luxury package that's going to give you the premium valcona leather in your choice of black cyaga beige okapi brown or metro gray additionally this model is going to throw in the brown eucalyptus which is again a luxury package exclusive you do have two other trim options for the other models now turning over here to your door it's going to be beautifully appointed you have a nice leather across the armrest with the stitching detail you have an alcantara insert all through the middle again you have this open pore brown eucalyptus trim and it is going to be soft touch along the top as far as your seats you have two person memory seating standard across the range and then all four windows are one touch auto up and down now taking a look over here at your seats this is going to be an eight-way power adjusting seat as standard however again the luxury package throws in several goodies one of those is going to be the fact that this has 18 ways of adjustment so a lot more as well as this button right here which is going to turn on a power massage function and then like i was saying this does have the upgraded valcona leather um it does feel a little bit more uh supple and you've got some kind of perforation details in here although it doesn't really look incredibly different from the regular one.

now of course every version of the q7 is going to have a nice cabin but the luxury package does amp things up by throwing in some features such as the fact that we have the extended leather group that's going to put a leather trim across the entire upper dashboard so as you can see even all the way up to the windshield you do have the leather with a stitching detail so that's certainly a nice touch down below you've got that nice single vent look you've got the big piece of piano black trim which blends in with the screens got some real wood over there of course you got more real wood that runs through here as well as a nice leather padding for your knee to rest against and everything in here does fit together absolutely beautifully as typical to the audi blind

now to start it up you want to press the standard button right ther now chorus what audi would be complete without their signature virtual cockpit setup that's going to be standard on every single q7 at this point and you do have a 12.3 inch reconfigurable gauge cluster you can scroll between all the kinds of information you see in other.

audi products including your map display which can be google earth when that's enabled and you can obviously take up the entire display just like that now in addition to that prestige is going to throw in the head up display at the top as well now pulling him back to the steering wheel of course we have electric power assisted steering we do have a nice leather wrapped steering wheel with standard power adjustment um as far as steering wheel heating that's going to be standard on the prestige and optional via the executive package on the premium plus let's go ahead and take a look at interior storage.

now this is one area where the q7 doesn't have quite as much as you'd expect for a vehicle of this size so if you lift up the center console that's pretty much all you're going to get right there so you've got this little felt lined area this is a wireless phone charging pad for premium plus and prestige trim levels and you've got this little section right here but other than that there's not really any other places to stick a cell phone or a loose item and as far as where to stick our coupons you can kind of cram those in there and then jam this down on it but no they don't fit particularly well and then like i was saying this is pretty much it you've got the 12 volt outlet two usb type-c is inside of there and a little spot to stick your key fob now coming back here to the shifter we do have the nice electronic style pull back for drive bump to the right if you want to shift manually and you do have paddle shifters on the steering wheel push all the way up to the top and that will bring up your 360 degree camera system standard on premium plus and prestige optional on the premium of course you have your bird's eye view as well as this view here and then everyone's favorite part press the 3d button and that gives you this really awesome drone-like view where you can spin all around the vehicle zoom in and zoom out just a really awesome and cool touch and audi of course does this pretty much better than anyone else then for park just press the p right there you do have an electronic parking brake behind the shifter and now let's move on over here to our audio system so what we have on board is the 730 watt 19 speaker bang and olson sound system it's included on premium plus and prestige trim levels and we'll go ahead and give that a sample right.

now wow so overall sound quality of this system is definitely top notch and very strong however if that's still not good enough for you you can also option on even higher caliber bang olufsen sound system the one that has the rising tweeters and all the fancy stuff like that okay so now we have basically our two displays here so this continues to be a 10.1 inch display at the top and 8.8 inch display at the bottom the bottom display is primarily used for climate controls so here are your climate controls you have a three zone automatic climate setup standard the prestige is going to throw in a four zone climate system um adjusting your temperature and fan speeds is just as easy as swiping up and down on these things right here very simple you can also adjust your zones by clicking on the seat and making that adjustment as you would expect all models are going to throw in the three stage heated seats and then you can also get three stage ventilated seats by going for the prestige or choosing a the executive package on the premium plus and then up at the top there you got a nice row of buttons there one of those for your home link universal remote garage door openers now taking a look at the top display this is where the mmi touch response system will live uh this continues to uh have the same setup as before which is basically a kind of tiled interface that reminds you of the tablet you do have things like your notification shade and then you've got your quick shortcuts off there off to the side.

now of course you have the standard navigation system which is going to have the google earth maps once again if you have that enabled and then you have both android auto and apple car carplay abilities the apple carplay can be ran wirelessly rising above the infotainment we have our frameless auto dimming mirror with the built-in compass the lighting is going to be led and touch sensitive of course and then we also have a standard panoramic sunroof as you can see the sunshade is power and it does have kind of a transparent appearance so you can kind of see through it even when it's closed obviously the front portion is going to open up and then another thing i want to point out while i'm up here is the beautiful alcantara headliner this comes with the luxury package and you can choose to have this in a beige or a black well guys it's always a pleasure to sit in an audi's rear seat and of course that's going to carry over for this q7 since this is the family focused audi crossover now let's talk about the space first since that's a strong suit for the q7 we have 39 inches of legroom as well as headroom which just place it above.

the xc90 as well as the accurate mdx if those are what you're comparing it to overall there's lots of space i can slide slide this seat forward and back and as is right now we have price seven inches of space behind drew's position and we also have room for my feet up underneath of the seat but since this is a pretty much fully loaded audi q7 there are a lot of features to talk about as well because they got to spoil you and comfort as well so here in the center every model is going to have these vents that's not super surprising but you also have them on the b pillar which is a nice touch then if we drop down here this is where you're going to notice all of your controls since we have the executive package we have four zone climate control so each rear passenger back here can adjust their fan speeds as well as the temperature and we're also going to have three stage heated rear seats standard on the prestige model dropping below that we have a 12-volt outlet as well as two usb type-cs we fold down the center armrest here that does reveal cup holders inside and then over here on the door trim.

we're going to have rear window sunshades as well but you buy a q7 because it has the third row so let's go ahead and show you what that looks like so in order to get back here push this button right here that's going to fold the seat flat and then you have to push this to release it out and then it is hydraulically lifted out of the way you can also use the buttons right here on the side but getting back into the third row well this is not going to be the biggest third row you can get in this segment it is going to be on par with the acura mdx however it is less than the volvo xc90 and of course you're going to get better third rows in something like a bmw x7 or gls as you can see i don't have a ton of legroom we're actually rated at 29 inches of leg room but this seat is scooted all the way back so you could scoot it forward a little bit more to give more room my feet can slide up underneath the seat though let's talk about the features we have a really small cup holder on both sides however i do want to point out there are not going to be any vents in the rear of this audi q7.

now this is an audi after all so you do expect have a power tailgate standard that's also going to come with hands-free abilities on every q7 so just wave your foot under the bumper to open it up now as far as your space is concerned in this area you're going to have 15 cubic feet behind the third row seats expands are 37 cubic feet and as a maximum you have 72 cubic feet in the q7 now that is right on par with the acura mdx a little less than the volvo xc90 as well as the other german rivals if you're looking at those but overall i think this is going to be plenty space for the vast majority of people that buy the q7 and it does finish really nicely so we have plush carpeting it's an audi after all here on the left side we have a net we're also going to have a 12-volt outlet and then you're going to notice these buttons right here on the side this one raises and lowers your air suspension to make it easier to load stuff in then you're also going to have these buttons right here which power fold the third row your passenger seat will be 18 way power adjusting with the massaging function which i believe you me i've really been enjoying today also we do have two person memory here on the passenger side as well now as far as the glove box is concerned we have a a very very nicely sized one it's led illuminated felt lined and just because you have enough money to afford an oddity doesn't mean you shouldn't use coupons and they do fit in here perfectly fine i mean you just throw them in they fit in and then up top we have a really nicely lined felt headliner with this beautiful alcantara it's uh has a mirror as well as led lighting and it is also the two-part setup where you can have it on both sides which i think is a really nice touch.

all right so here we are in the tfsi 55 audi q7 um so what that weird expression means to the or actually means to real people is the fact that we've got a three liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine 335 horsepower 369 pound-feet of torque and this does come with the mild hybrid boost so that's a 48 volt mild hybrid electric boost to the power train mostly it's powering advanced auto start stop which we'll show you guys in just a little bit but as far as power delivery very smooth very refined and quite swift yeah now they do also offer the tfsi 4d5 as you would expect that's a smaller engine that's a 2 liter turbo 4 cylinder 248 horsepower for that model i'd say the vast majority will be this v6 setup and that's certainly a good thing like said this is a really incredibly smooth powertrain setup and i think that's what the buyers are kind of wanting if you go for this segment of vehicle and just speaking about the comfort in general i do want to mention that because that is certainly the q7s mission this is not made to be a sporty vehicle really nothing in this segment is and uh you know just cruising along here we're going 51 miles an hour it really is just superb these luxury three row crossovers you it's hard to complain about absolutely anything with the ride quality it's it's amazing the seats are great i'm getting a massage right now i mean it really just is next level comfort for you as well as your family in the back.

now it is worth noting the prestige model which is what we have today does come standard with the air suspension so that certainly does help the ride quality right and that's an adaptive air suspension so meaning when you're in comfort mode like we are right now you get that ultimate comfort click into the sport mode you're gonna see things actually firm up and give you that uh you know sportier feel so it's definitely nice to have that adaptability as well i also want to talk for a second about the transmission you have the eight speed automatic transmission just like in all audi products this thing is buttery smooth really quick shifting as well it doesn't leave you wanting for power or anything like that of course also being an audi means you have the signature quattro all-wheel drive system and that's going to be standard across the entire lineup yeah and that does also mean you have one fuel economy for both engines it's going to be rated at 18 23 20 combined.

which actually is quite a bit of change for 2022 it's likely due to just epa testing procedures because it was rated 18 last year so certainly an improvement there to get the extra fuel economy bonus and then the 45 is 22 combined let's go ahead and get our sound level reading excellent 52.6 decibels i mean it hardly gets better than that in any vehicle at any price point that we test it it really is exceptionally quiet in here as well as being smooth so smooth now let's go and do our air ball and slam dunk i'll start us off today with the slam dunk i think that's pretty much a given here with the q7 it's just comfort this is really an exceptionally comfortable vehicle especially if you go for this standard uh air suspension on the prestige model it really just is everything you want out of a luxury suv right and on the airball side of things i'm going to airball this same thing i've airballed for the last couple of years.

when this got the new audi designed cabin it really reduced the amount of storage space inside of here as i pointed out in the interior i won't rehash that but you just don't have a lot of places to stick things like your cell phone and you kind of have to use the cup holder so as you can see just right here we have this in the cup holder if i had a second drink or something i'd already be out of space let's talk about the pricing so the premium 45 is going to start at 55.8 and it goes all the way up to the prestige 55 that starts at 72 000. this one's a real loaded out so we have pretty much every option you can get on the q7 there might be a few additional things that you could get but plus the destination of a thousand ninety five.

this one's going to be coming in at 83 265 bucks so at the end of the day audi continues to make small refinements to this q7's formula by giving you more equipment and more standard features each year and it just continues to strengthen what was already just a superb luxury crossover you know this is the type of crossover that when you get behind the wheel you just realize  it nails all the important things for families well guys that's all for this in-depth review of the 2022 audi q7 prestige.
